THE SEAFARING DICTIONARY

The initial declared purpose of the present publication was to bring together a whole range of nautical info. In fact, such amount of information would require a separate library. The book is a mixture of factual technical information and lexicology, together with wild superstition - it covers not only what seamen say, but also what they believe and think, and how seafarers describe their equipment; it shows what laws and traditions determine how the seamen do their job. We all know that navigable waters cover more than seventy of the Earth's surface and, until last century, world's oceans were the only possible option for any intercontinental travel.

Even today, when airlines are taking over passenger traffic, the vessels still carry almost whole world's trade, which is rapidly expanding trade. That is why it is not that surprising that a huge part of the history has been written on the oceans; you must have already noted that so many words used nowadays, have nautical origins. Though most of them are English words, centuries ago they might be French words.

This book is the compendium of nearly nine thousand terms taken from different sources of maritime terminology. Some of the entries are brief, but others have been supplemented with additional information.

THE TRANSPORTATION OF LIQUEFIED GAS — AN OVERVIEW OF SOME METHODS USED FOR MITIGATING THE RISKS

This presentation is dedicated to the transportation of liquefied gas. It contains an overview of some methods used for mitigating the risks and describes potential hazards of LNG and LPG, and summarizes various techniques to minimize their risks on the vessels, at terminals and jetties, combined operating practices and procedures, contingency planning. The presentation starts with some historical background.

The marine transportation of LPG started before the World War Two and was conducted in the pressurized containment and in relatively small quantities. Transportation of LNG started several years after that, in 1959. Today, there are more than thousand of gas carriers. The major hazard associated with the marine transportation of all liquefied gases is not their liquefied form but rather the vapor released. The heat is released, subsequently, that may ignite and cause fire.

With regard to the possible pollution of the marine environment, liquefied gases are neither toxic nor persistent so shall not be considered water pollutants; however, possible explosions was obviously cause lethal effects to various marine organisms - but in general the environmental hazard is less than the one of the crude oil spills...

THE SHIP

The debut by Antonia Honeywell, a famous writer of the novels. According to the numerous reviews, the book is powerful and interesting to read. It is a genre-defying and truly luminous novel. The book takes you to the times when the Earth is over-crowded with people and, as a result, under-resources.  Different parts of London have been burnt while others are covered with the water.

People are hungry and homeless, living in the tents placed in the city parks, sleeping in the museum. The city is full of people who are disposed and desperate. The protagonist of the book, girl called Lalla, has a relatively comfortable life as her father is a very important person having very good and strong connections with the rulers; her mother ensures that Lalla always has enough food and clean water. Her family manages to keep and maintain their comfortable apartment in London. But she has no friends and only communicates with parents...

The book tells the readers about her voyage on board the ship; this voyage has taken one hundred and fifty days; the story told by the author will make readers think deeper about what happens on our planet, take a glance at the people and their behavior, and this is quite important feature of the book.

THE REGULARITY OF THE IRREGULAR VERBS IN ENGLISH

This book presents an explanation for the IVA system in Plural Nominal (umlaut) ("foot-feet", "mouse-mice") and Past Tense (umlaut) verbal formations ("give-gave", "take-took"') in English. The IVA forms, which share the morphophonemic process of IVA, are considered to be irregular in Modern English, since the IVA appears in a very limited number of forms: i.e. approximately seven Noun Plurals and, approximately seventy-six "irregular" Past Tense verb forms divided into fourteen subclasses.

The author of the publication uses the inductive methodology. The publication consists of seven parts. The first part is pretty introductory and provides the general overview of the concept and comparison of regular and irregular verbal and nominal forms in English language. The second part is named Background and, as it is implied by the title, it contains some historical background of different grammar systems, and also some overview of tenses. The next two parts have been dedicated to the non-irregular and phonological hypotheses. The fifth part addresses the semantic non-irregularity, while the last two parts of the book cover further evidence for both above mentioned hypotheses, and discussions/conclusions.

THE SCHOONER BERTHA L. DOWNS

This work by Basil Greenwill is fully dedicated to the famous schooner and contains various plans, drawings and general technical/non-technical info on this ship. Bertha L. Dawns was one of those large schooners constructed in England at the end of XIX - beginning of XX century; almost all of such vessels were mostly employed in the coastal trade, mostly dealing with the coal transportation from Virginia to New England. The ship addressed in this publication, was launched in 1908 and was later sold to Danish owner - she was given a new name - "Atlas". Like all other vessels, her contemporaries, Bertha L. Dawns managed to make a very good profitable living through the early twentieth century before getting broken up in Germany after 42 successful working years under five flags.

The type to which this vessel used to belong, differs a lot from any other one. Those ships were able to operate quite economically, having a small steam engine on board, used to hoist the sails. This, in turn, required much smaller crew in comparison to the conventional steam ships. However, the speed of these vessels was relatively low, since they were fully dependent on the wind, so the cargoes they used to haul were mostly stone, coal and lumber...
