SHIP INSPECTION REPORT (SIRE) PROGRAMME

The present OCIMF publication starts with a brief historical overview of the programme which was worked out and implemented by OCIMF some decades ago with the sole intention to provide all the members of this organization with the opportunity to release and submit the ship inspection reports for distribution. The participation in the subject programme is fully voluntary.

Two revisions were made to this programme in 1997 and 2007 years and they have also been dealt with within the paper, together with the procedure for the uniform vessel inspection. The second section of the book contains the questionnaires to be used during the vessel inspections, as well as the inspector manuals. The third section is mainly dedicated to the VIQ, standing for the "vessel inspection questionnaire", and its availability to ship operators.

The remaining sections cover the conduct of inspections, distribution of the reports, some general notes, certification and associated documentation, management of the ship's crew, ship navigation issues, safety management, prevention of the marine pollution, cargo handling/ballasting systems of the vessel - petroleum/chemical/gas, mooring arrangements, communication, machinery and steering compartments of the vessel, general appearance and technical condition of the ship. All information that has been provided in the present publication was verified to be fully up-to-date and definitely practical.

The present publication is deservedly treated as maybe the best among the works available today for the accurate technical translation from English to French since it is covering the vast majority of the vessel's mechanisms, gears, parts of the hull and relevant working processes. The volume opens with a page demonstrating the main dimensions of the vessels and associated terms in two languages, followed by the part intended to depict the general arrangement plus the structure of the cargo ships.

The next chapters have been dedicated to the development of the superstructures of cargo vessels, ship motion, design issues, tonnage, load lines, ship stability, freeboard and hull subdivision, all stages of shipbuilding starting from the preparation for bidding through shipyard trades and production facilities and up to the yard equipment used, welding matters and other important ship construction techniques. SHIP COLLISION DAMAGE

The main declared purpose of the author of the present thesis was to develop a procedure for the analysis of the ship collisions that would address all ship types and all possible damage scenarios. Among the main aspects covered within this work are the deterministic analysis and numerical Monte Carlo-based simulation of collisions to estimate the distributions for the damage expected to occur to the struck vessel and released energy, damage statistics analysis, and new proposal for the regulations governing the damage stability applying the probabilistic approach.

Three new programs have been developed and introduced for the deterministic analysis, addressing the damage to the struck vessel, striking vessel and to both of them. The author has conducted a thorough analysis of the information contained in the database of the damage from collisions occurred in the past with respect to the type of collision and relation between vessels plus the parameters of damage and the main particulars.

Chapters of the thesis cover the risk analysis, external dynamics and internal mechanics of ship collisions, deterministic and probabilistic analysis of collisions, damage statistics, comparison of the results obtained in the course of the observations and simulations, stability regulations, input for the collision programs, damage relations and other relevant information.

SHIP ARRESTS IN PRACTICE

The very latest tenth edition of the publication issued this year and incorporating eighty-six jurisdictions. This document was intended to provide all interested parties with the guidance through the commonly known issues that usually arise from the arrest of the marine vessel and to offer them all information required to unravel the procedures in eighty-six countries of the world.

This paper has become a must-have one for the maritime industry of today. It is annually updated and revised in order to continue serving as a very handy reference tool to assist the shipping community in proper understanding of the applicable procedures as well as the associated practical matters arising from the arrest/release of a vessel all around the world. The ultimate aim of the network is to defend the interest of the ship owners and crew members in any procedures relating to the ship arrest. The book contains a very practical ship arrest questionnaire providing immediate answers to the most common questions related to the arrest and release procedures, claims, applicable laws etc.

Then, the procedures in each of the eighty-six countries are described - from Algeria to Vietnam. The appendices contain the articles of the 1952, convention on the arrest of sea-going ships, 1999 convention on arrest of ships, unification of certain rules of law related to liens and mortgages 1926, and 1993 convention on maritime liens and mortgages...

SHIELD OF EMPIRE — THE ROYAL NAVY AND SCOTLAND

Here is another very popular book by Brian Lavery. The original intention of the author was to assist the readers searching for the information on the history of the British Royal Navy fleet. The topics that have been addressed in this publication are covering the naval operations held in Scotland, the Grand Fleet and it's bases, The Clyde Convoy base, naval training, sea power and the Jacobites, and others.

Some notes on the material presented in the book and the index of ships are there in the last section. This is definitely a must-have publication for every naval historian as it breaks absolutely new ground in telling the interesting and real life stories of the naval campaign of the past, which have almost been undeservedly forgotten today. Quite a large part of the Navy was based in Scotland, for example the Grand Fleet based at Scapa Flow and Trident submarines based at Fastane - we are now talking about the periods of the world wars and also years after 1960.

The vast majority of the British sailors of the World War Two were partly trained in Scotland. However, the author wants to underline that the Navy never felt "at home" in Scotland. This publication will tell readers about the times of the Royal Navy in Scotland.

SHARK LIFE — TRUE STORIES ABOUT SHARKS AND THE SEA

Here is a very popular book about sharks. Nowadays, their attacks are natural news leaders. The sharks are the perfect showstopping spectacle: horror, blood and guts, and mystery. In addition to that, they are highly videogenic. Even in the case when the camera cannot get a proper shot of shark or its victim, it can still pan the empty beach, the forbidding ocean, focus on the warning signs like "Danger: Sharks" or "Beach Closed".

Such attacks usually dominate the news in the summertime. Magazines, newspapers, magazines, TV and radio news, internet websites keep count of the numerous incidents of supposed carnage. Experts speculate on the meanings and causes of this assault on humanity. The truth is that such hysteria is not justified by statistics or other facts. Though shark attacks seemed to occur more frequently as the twentieth century went on, they leveled off during the 1990s. 60-80 attacks are reported all over the world each year.
