RICKMERS STANDARD FOR STOWAGE AND SECURING OF PROJECT CARGO

The present Standard shall be considered the basic source reference of proper planning, safe handling and stowage, as well as securing and lashing of project cargoes. It is applicable to all vessels and forms a part of Rickmers-Linie QMS. Its declared purpose and spirit is to get the ship owners, stevedores and, in fact, any other involved parties informed about the safe cargo securing and handling techniques.

All technical details of this Standard fully comply with the IMO Res. A.714(17), as amended. The document, in particular, is intended to provide detailed info on the lifting, bedding, securing and lashing of transported cargo and also deals with the equipment utilized; the maintenance related issues have also been addressed. The cargo information that must be supplied by the shippers as per SOLAS Chapter IV reg. 2, has also been described in this standard, together with the required configuration of bedding areas, securing points and lifting provisions.

These aspects are to correspond with the tensile strength of the securing gear on board of the vessel as well as the deck layout. In case the requirements stated in this Standard cannot be met, an alternative solution providing the equivalent safety level is to be applied.

SHIP CONSTRUCTOR 2008 R2 (SHIPCAM)

This release of the ShipConstructor is a very user-friendly 3D tool for modeling, that was specifically developed to be used by the shipbuilding industry professionals, such as naval architects and ship constructors. This powerful parametric modeling program is database-driven is arranged so that it runs into the AutoCAD 2007/2008 and easily interfaces with a huge number of supported programs, such as Max- and MultiSurf, Rhino, Inventor and others.

It took three years to develop this program. It shall be noted that this software is much better platform than any of the predecessors - it is more robust and user-friendly in comparison to the previous release. The overall functionality of this release is quite similar to the one of the SC 2006 so there is no any need for additional training; in the meantime, the performance of the program has been significantly improved.

There are also some new modules under development at the moment - they are being released or planned for release in the nearest future. Please also note that the system requirements for this release are slightly higher than for the previous one. However, two versions of the software, say 2005 and 2008, can be run at the same time.

SIMUFACT WELDING 3.1.1

We introduce the new 3.1. version of Simufact Welding software that was developed by Simufact professionals and released in 2013. Here is the brief overview of some new features: In this release of the program start scripts can be defined separately; domain decomposition is now supported; "refresh results" button during calculation now copies result files of first and last time step for Simufact Solver in order to reduce network traffic; GUI can be started without necessity to possess administrator rights; moreover, local installation of the GUI is not necessary anymore.

In addition to the above, there are even more newly implemented features in Simufact Solver, as well - for example, optimization of memory management, of check routines and improvement of calculation time especially by implementation of Domain Decomposition Method (DDM), parallelization by decomposition into smaller calculable domains communicating with each other. Can be combined with multiprocessing.

DDM allows the calculation of large models. This software will be useful and practical to the engineers dealing with ship design and construction as well as to the students who may use the program for training purposes.

TANKER HANDBOOK FOR DECK OFFICERS

With the expansion that happened to the world energy over the past century the oil has become the major player, capable of meeting all the energy needs. Before that, coal used to be the main fossil; however, oil started to play more and more important role as it is easier to store and handle.

This revised and updated edition of the Handbook addresses the most important developments in oil tankers and the equipment utilized for handling the oil; the chemical and LNG tankers are also covered. Nowadays, marine transportation of oil is a vast industry and the importance of safety matters caused a huge number of national and international regulations to be developed and implemented.

All those regulations are updated on the regular basis and all crew members are obliged to be familiar with them and get all necessary training in order to meet the requirements. Quite a lot time passed since first edition of this book was released; the author tried to retain most part of the material related to the older ships even in the new releases of the Handbook, for broader view and proper understanding of the subject. In this latest edition the COW systems have also been covered due to their input in the environment protection.

THE ART OF ELECTRONICS

Here is the 2nd thoroughly updated edition of the world famous "The Art of Electronics" book, which has been revised in order to include all latest developments of the electronics world. The present publication is worldwide accepted as very successful reference book on the analog/digital electronic circuit design, in fact it revolutionized the whole process of teaching electronics by emphasizing the methods that are currently in use by circuit designers -- a combination of the basic laws and rules of thumb plus huge number of tricks.

The efforts of the authors resulted in largely nonmathematical treatment encouraging circuit intuition as well as brainstorming and simplified calculations of the electrical circuit performance and values. The publication is full of sharp insights and, at the same time, requires minimum knowledge of mathematics. The depth and richness of examples supplementing the theoretical material, is truly genuine.

We would recommend this book to any person involved in the experiments or researches in the field of electronics since it is delightful; note that all schematics are readable and the circuits do work. The publication features a tremendous diversity of invaluable technical info and will provide readers with an easy way to learn everything about the electronic design.

THE ARMING AND FITTING OF ENGLISH SHIPS OF WAR 1600—1815

This book is intended to serve two main purposes. The first is to provide ship-modelers, marine archaeologists, and historian; with a guide to how English ships of war were fined out during the great age of the sailing ship. In this respect I hope it will follow in the traditions of James Lees' Masting and Riggings and Peter Goodwin's Construction and Fitting of the Sailing Man of War 1650-1850.

However, the reader will notice some differences from these works. I do not claim to have provided every piece of data on all the fittings of the years in question nor have I attempted to draw up tables of proportions for various ships and periods. Instead, in the main text, I have described the general principles which affected the design of each fitting, and in the appendices provided material from contemporary sources which have been selected largely to provide detailed information and specific dimensions. I have not attempted to interpolate from these to provide proportions which might cover other cases, preferring to leave this to the reader. The second purpose is broader: to study the development of a particular technology for its own sake.

The book is almost entirely confined to the Royal Navy, mainly because there are sources, in the form of manuscripts, plans and models, for this body, while those relating to merchant ship owners are rare, for few records were kept in the first place, and those that were have largely perished...

THE AGE OF THE GALLEY — MEDITERRANEAN OARED VESSELS SINCE PRE—CLASSICAL TIMES

This title belongs to the series of publications providing readers with the detailed and quite comprehensive account of the technologies that have shaped the whole human history. It has been originally conceived as a fundamental reference work considered a first stop for all people who seek the information covering the aspects of the subject and is mainly concerned to be complete.

This volume is very timely and important. In fact, a last decade so much work has been done in all fields and the editors of this volume have made their team of contributing authors with the intention to bring together i a single title the chronologically different areas of work related to this problem. Another important association with this volume is that it covers all historical, geographical and even economic aspects of the galley fleets. This is the first book to enable the readers to perform a correct assessment of the subject. The readers are admitted to the workshop where they will hear the claims and sometimes the disagreements of the workforce and realize that such a publication can only show the ways to these ends.

Long story short, the publication is very useful and will be greatly appreciated by all enthusiasts of maritime history because of the rarely found and valuable information. The content covers the ancestry of the triremes, Hellenistic oared warships, oar systems, Roman empire fleets, merchant galleys, naval installations, and other marine vehicles...
