VALVE HANDBOOK

This is the third edition of the popular and remarkably comprehensive Valve Handbook significantly revised in order to include the details of the recent technological advances and discuss the design and performance-related issues, selection of the valves, their operation and practical applications.

This reference source has been updated and now includes a completely new chapter dedicated to the green technology that is currently being employed by the industry, and also to provide better overview of the key environmental standards expected to be met by the process plants. This publication contains new useful information on valves that are is use in the waste water industry, covers the application of the ESO valves designed to the emergency shutting down, some attention has been paid to the valves specifically designed to be used in the nuclear industry, and to the procurement process for the N-stamp.

The latest changes that occurred in the shutoff classifications have also been dealt with, together with the application of the wireless technologies to current smart tech. In addition, note that among the topics covered within this edition of the handbook there are criteria for selection of valves, problems commonly faced with the valves, manual actuators, smart positioners and so many others.

VIBRATION

Several quite significant technical developments and achievements have been accomplished in the area of ship hull vibration during past couple of decades allowing for serious improvements in the technologies for design of ships through avoidance of the excessive hull vibration. The present volume has been specifically designed to deal with the most important technical of the vibration of hull.

This book is opening with the intro section that provides designers with the general info and also basic definitions. The second section is dealing with the theory and concepts of vibration, including the continuous and discrete analysis together with the underwater radiated noise and ship propeller exciting forces. The third section of the title mainly covers the analysis and design issues including basic considerations plus design approaches, added mass and excitation of the diesel engine/propellers, stiffness of foundation of the main thrust bearing, approximate evaluations governing the natural frequencies of the superstructure, cavitation noise etc.

The last section of the volume covers the criteria of vibration, its measurement including design verification and corrective investigation, and post-trial corrections including both hydrodynamic and structural modifications, propeller change and determining the model constraints. Very useful title for all ship designers.

WARSHIPS FOR EXPORT — ARMSTRONG WARSHIPS 1867—1927

My interest in Armstrongs began in 1944 when I bought a copy of the 1903 edition of Janes Fighting Ships. In the Italian section was a photograph of a cruiser, the "Piemonte". with a description which included the statement that she was one of the earliest Elswick cruisers and that she was the most heavily armed vessel for her size in the world. Intrigued, I found other Elswick cruisers in the volume and comparing them with their Royal Navy equivalents they seemed better gunned, speedier and better looking.

Twenty four years later it occurred to me that a description of these ships might be the basis for two or three articles in the recently founded "Warship International". I wrote to Vickers for more information and eventually I found myself in correspondence with P H Judd, the Chief Naval Architect (merchant ships) who had access to a mass of archival material giving details about Armstrong ships including dates and dimensions together with a number of photograph albums. Eventually a series of articles were published in "W.I." dealing with Armstrong cruisers and other types. They were mostly bald descriptions with little account of the political climate in which they had been built, nothing about their design history and only a sketchy summary of their careers.

Apart from Judd's personal information, based on Armstrong records, all sources were secondary. A few years ago I was contacted by the late David Topliss, then a mature undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, who was engaged in writing the complex and fascinating story of the "Rio de Janeiro". From him I learnt that J. D. Scott, Vickers' historian, had deposited a large amount of Armstrong material in the University Library, most valuably the Elswick Yard Report Books running from 1883 to January 1913, containing bi-monthly reports to the directors on the progress of warships building in the yard. But why bother to write about a firm which ceased to build warships in 1927, of which possibly only one survives, while not even the shipyards and the works which built and armed them remain?..

WARTSILA 6L32 MARINE DIESEL ENGINE MANUAL

This book contains all data and instructions required for the safe and effective operation/maintenance of the engines plus the instructions for handling- personal protection and first aid when fuel-, lubricating oils and cooling water additives are handled during normal operation/maintenance work.

Basic general technical knowledge has not been entered. Consequently, we assume that the engine operation/maintenance personnel is already informed of the care of diesel engines. A really must have document for crew members dealing with the routine operation/maintenance of the diesel engines and for professional conducting installation and repair.

WAVE MECHANICS FOR OCEAN ENGINEERING

Today, we so glad to offer you a very useful and interesting monograph, the author of which is dealing with quite broad range of various subjects that all directly related to the basics mechanics of the sea waves. Paolo Coccotti, the author of this volume, has highlighted the results obtained during the recent theoretical researches of random waves generated by the wind.

The fresh-look approach to the established and proven theoretical concepts was applied by the author. The publication provides readers with numerous worked real-life examples for the design of various coastal and offshore marine structures. Another subject addressed within this publication is quasi-deterministic mechanics together with the loads commonly exerted by the 3D wave groups on offshore structures. This work would be primarily aimed to the graduate students and also professionals, scientists and researchers in the field of ocean engineering.

However, the manner in which the content has been presented and arranged within this volume, has made it suitable even for the undergraduates. Some of the relatively complex theoretical concepts have been clearly explained plus duly supplemented with several informative live examples and case studies for easier and proper understanding. The title is covering statistical/deterministic topics relating to the mechanics of the waves...

WHO GREENS THE WAVES?

The main content of this volume prepared by Judith van Leeuwen, is presenting a culmination of a very interesting and important research project performed by the author, whose intention was to thoroughly explore the idea of the environmental governance of the maritime/offshore industry, looking from the historical perspective. The book opens with some introductory information, including the general info on the marine environment, governance, research questions etc.

The following chapter of has been mainly dedicated to the changing spheres of authority in the environmental governance, while the third chapter is dealing with the research methodology while the fourth and fifth chapters address changing authority in the maritime/offshore field. The other chapter is focusing on the comparison conducted of the environmental governance of the offshore vs shipping industries. The closing chapter of the volume contains the conclusions and reflection. The main portion of the document has been supplemented with the references and several appendices, summary, info on the conceptual framework, various established methods of research plus associated questions.

The environment protection is quite a new field of research and study, and that is the basic reason why there are no too many sources of info available on the subject matters. This, in turn, is what makes the present volume so valuable to all interested persons.
