ENGINE ROOM WASTE MANAGEMENT — OILY WATER AND SEPARATORS (VIDEO)

Here is the training video film accompanying the booklet devoted to the problem of the management of the shipboard wastes that are generated in the engine room. It is very important for all crew members and all visitors to duly understand the importance of the proper waste management and know all relevant procedures, since the failure to follow these procedures can eventually result in the pollution of the environment.

This set of video and booklet makes one of the parts of the training package, the other parts of which are dealing with the sewage and waste water treatment, sludge and the incinerators, and the oil record book. It is imperative for the trainees to get themselves familiarized with the content of each part in order to get proper understanding of the procedures.

The training is recommended to the crew members of all vessels since all vessels have machinery spaces where wastes are generated and shall be managed in proper way that will eliminate the possibility of the environment pollution. Taking into account that the training has been developed by the recognized and maybe the most respected training provider, we recommend it to everyone willing to improve their skills and raise the awareness in this regard.

ENGINE ROOM WASTE MANAGEMENT — SEWAGE AND WASTE WATER TREATMENT (VIDEO)

The present training video is intended to supplement the guide devoted to the management of the engine room waste and treatment of the sewage and waste water in particular. Note that this set is one of the four-part training package with the other parts dealing with the oil record book, sludge and the incinerator, and oily water and separators, giving in total full picture of the shipboard waste management and all required instructions.

This video will provide trainees with the general information of shipboard sewage and waste water treatment. The trainees will know how the sewage treatment plant is constructed in general and will get understanding of its working principle. In addition to that, they will find the process of cleaning of the plant and its periodic technical maintenance demonstrated and duly explained.

They will also understand the requirements that shall be followed when discharging the shipboard wastes - such requirements shall always be considered in order to avoid any sort of pollution of the marine environment - and this includes the relevant sections of the Annex IV to the International MARPOL Convention covering the sewage pollution prevention, as applicable to the type and size of the vessel.

ENGINE ROOM WASTE MANAGEMENT — SLUDGE AND THE INCINERATOR (VIDEO)

This film is about an important and vital aspect of our jobs - it will show the trainees how to deal with the shipboard wastes without breaking the rules and regulations, particularly ones contained in the MARPOL Convention. Let us have a look at the waste oil, sludge and bilge water transfer flow diagram. How is this compared with your previous ship?..

The present video training film is dealing with the sludge waste and use of the shipboard incinerator, and is supplemented with this training booklet released by the same maritime training provider. They both form a part of the four-section set addressing the problem of the shipboard waste management, three other parts of which are devoted to the oil record book, oily water and separator, and sewage and waste water management.

We highly recommend all our users and all crew members of all vessels regardless of their size and type to have a close look into the content of each part of this training package since it is critically important to be fully aware of the correct procedures of the waste management enabling crew members to manage the wastes in a manner compliant with the internationally recognized standards; failure to do so will eventually result in very serious consequences...

ENGINE ROOM WASTE MANAGEMENT — THE OIL RECORD BOOK (VIDEO)

The last part of the training series devoted to the management of the shipboard wastes, with the other parts dealing with the oily water and separators, sewage and waste water management, and sludge and the incinerators. This video supplements the training booklet developed by the same training provider and addressing same important topic of the oil record book.

It goes without saying that all crew members on board shall be duly aware of the proper procedures established and implemented for the management of the wastes generated in the engine room of the vessel. The oil record book is considered one of the important parts of any shipboard waste management system.

That is why all persons on board and particularly those directly engaged in and responsible for the waste management shall have clear understanding of the content of the ORB, information that shall be contained therein and its proper arrangements, and also be able to maintain records in the oil record book in a timely and accurate manner. Taking into account the seriousness of the consequences of failure to follow the procedures of the shipboard waste management, we highly recommend all our users to check the content of all four parts of this training pack.

ENVIRONMENTAL THREAT FROM MARINE INVASIVE SPECIES

This section of the marine training will give some knowledge of the different threats of ballast water. Let us start with the environmental impact ballast water may have. Marine species are being carried around the world in ships' ballast water. When discharged into new environments, they may become invasive and severely disrupt the native ecology, impact economic activities such as fisheries and cause disease and even death in humans.

Unlike an oil spill, which can be cleaned up, the effects of marine species introductions are usually irreversible. It is estimated that more that seven thousand different species are carried around the world with the ships' ballast every day. Every nine weeks a marine species invades a new environment somewhere in the world. The list of species that have already hitchhiked with ballast water around the world and created damage to the environment includes north American comb jelly, Asian kelp, north pacific seastar, European green crab, zebra mussel, toxic algae, cholers, and many others.

This video will give you some information about each of the marine species causing unwanted impact on the environment. When fisheries, coastal industry and other commercial activities and resources are disrupted by the invading species, this is an example of the economical impact. It is estimated that the actual cost of all invasive marine species is in the vicinity of 183 billion dollars per year in the United States alone...

THE SHIP ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN (VIDEO)

Shipping industry is permanently developing and now it is entering an absolutely new era. From now on, all ships will be obliged to sail not only safely but also with maximum energy efficiency. Energy efficiency has always been treated as a very important factor in shipping. Many shipping companies, certain ships and even individual crew members have all made significant efforts to reduce energy consumption on board their ships.

However, now energy efficiency must be considered a key factor of all shipping operations. The fundamental reason for this is cost saving. Reducing energy use saves money for the ship and the company. Obviously, should something go wrong with this, the costs will rise for the shipping company. That is why there is an increased competition for the cost saving though more efficient use of the fuel.

Another critically important factor is that increase of the energy efficiency will eventually lead to the reduced emission of the carbon dioxide considered one of the most serious environmental problems. The present video supplements the training booklet on the same problem and you are encouraged to use both of them as a set in order to achieve better training results.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TWO—STROKE MARINE DIESEL ENGINE

As the name of this film implies, it provides the required basic intro to the two-stroke marine diesel engines. It was prepared on the basis of the valuable input provided by Viggo A. Kjaer, professor at The RTU, i.e. Royal Technical University of Denmark. Today, the diesel engine propels half the tonnage of the whole world shipping.

Given good care, the diesel engine will provide a maximum of effect on a minimum of oil consumption. The engineer is here for that, at the moment he is checking the temperatures of the exhaust and cooling water.

His routine inspection is taking him further down to the second platform with the intercoolers for charging air. Now, he has reached the bottom where his flashlight has revealed the return piston cooling oil behind the sightglasses...

POWERED WATERTIGHT DOORS (VIDEO)

When you join your vessel for the first time, note that it critically important for your safety to become thoroughly familiar with the particulars of the vessel, safety equipment on board, their design features and locations. One of the design features normally fitted to nearly all types of ships is the use of the powered watertight doors intended to protect the ship's hull from the risk of flooding in case of the grounding, collision or structural damage.

When closed, these doors become part of the ship's structure acting as a sort of reliable barrier for the flood water, and their strength is vital - they are built from the heavy steel requiring them to be moved by hydraulics or powered by means of the electric motors.

Watch this training video and you will get a full idea of what the shipboard powered watertight doors are, how and where they are commonly installed, what are the dangers associated with their operation in you fail to follow the correct procedure, and how to avoid the risks of getting trapped and harmed. This training will be best if watched with this booklet on same topic since they perfectly supplement each other.
