Offshore drilling and production have always represented a highly complex and technically challenging mosaic of operations. With the phenomenal surge in offshore activities witnessed in the late 1970s and early 1980s and the resultant introduction of innovative equipment and techniques, the demand has grown for more and more qualified, highly speciali2ed individuals to design and execute the myriad phases of drilling and production. However, with this specialization it has become increasingly difficult for any one individual to gain a general overview of the full scope of activities involved and how the new equipment and techniques fit into the overall picture. The purpose of this volume is to attempt to present the reader with technically detailed examinations of specialized, state-of-the-art designs, equipment, and techniques and to present a comprehensive overview of the great spectrum of offshore drilling and production operations.
