The process of preparing of cargo holds of the ship for the next intended carriage is definitely one of the most critical elements in the list of bulk carrier operations; it requires proper and very careful planning and of course competent execution, since the lack of preparation will not only lead to claims related to cargo quality (like contamination, water ingress, shortage), but also to the various contractual claims, such as delayed or even failed surveys, charter-patry disputes and off-hire claims. As the name implies, this publication by the UK P&I Club will shed some light on the process of preparation - among the topics included in the guidance, there are cargo declaration, standards for cargo hold cleanliness, fixing the cargo voyage, some specific requirements and instructions, common clause of cargo damage, loss prevention - basic standards, safety and maintenance, etc.
