The book presents a good overview of the methods, products and various applications of marine biotechnology. We all know that a large portion of the surface of our planet is covered by the ocean. Therefore, more than eighty percent of all living organisms can be found in aquatic ecosystems. Thus, these organisms constitute a very rich reservoir for various biochemical processes and chemical materials. The literature for marine natural products has been extensively reviewed when writing this book. Compounds isolated from marine phytoplankton and microorganisms, algae, mollusks, tunicates etc. have been collected. Also, biosynthetic studies, and syntheses leading to the revision of structures or stereochemistries, have been dealt with. Biochemical materials and processes from marine sources make these materials available to applications in pharmaceuticals, cosme-ceuticals or nutraceuticals, as well as for the production of biopoly-mers, bioenergy and biofuels. Also, biomaterials from marine-origin biopolymers have been reviewed.
