Today, maritime security is an extremely hot issue which attracts the attention of the whole world. In the modem era, maritime security mainly concerns the safety of navigation, the cracking down on transnational crimes including maritime terrorism and sea piracy as well as prevention of conflicts. In the context of non-traditional security, issues such as SAR (search and rescue) and maritime environmental security are included. Maritime security is of very high importance to the South China Sea - it is located in Southeast Asia and serves as a critical sea route for the maritime transport of East Asian countries.
