As the name implies, the document presented to your attention provides the draft of a revised Model Course 7.03 - Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch, 2014 edition. The following notes are intended to highlight the main objectives or training outcomes of each part of the function. The notes also contain some material on topics which are not adequately covered in the quoted references. This function covers the theory and practice of navigation necessary for the effective and safe navigation of the ship in coastal waters, including the use of charts, position fixing by terrestrial observations and the extraction of information from relevant documents. The use of electronic navigational aids is covered but proficiency in the use of radar forms the subject of a separate model course. It also deals with the theory and practice of the use of observations of celestial bodies for determining position lines and checking compass errors. Trainees will gain a thorough knowledge of COLREG 1972 and be able to apply them when in charge of a navigational watch.
