People have always tried to utilize the forces of wind and water to generate the power. The sailing ships and boats of the past used the wind  for propulsion. You should agree that it was quite untrivial task to maneuver a sailing vessel to some destination point under frequently and seriously changing weather, sea and wind conditions.

Moreover, seamen always have to sail through very narrow passageways and through areas with dense traffic. The proceedings of the Eighth Robotic Sailing conference contained in the present publication, have been divided into three major parts. The opening part of the book has been devoted mostly to different technical hardware solutions newly developed for the autonomous sailing platforms - the design and construction, test sailing have been addressed, together with the application of various devices.

The second part is intended to introduce some new ideas relating to the mission planning, localization and avoidance of obstacles. Finally, the last part of this volume is dealing with the design and modeling of controllers and sensors, including their evaluation. Note that some of the papers contained in this collection may treat more than one of the aspects mentioned above.
