THE AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR: BOWDITCH
|D O W N L O A D|
One of the most popular classic publications of the maritime world providing navigators with the navigational requirements and established procedures to be followed. At the very beginning, the book was mainly devoted to the celestial navigation; however, with the course of time the approach has also been updated and the publication is now covering a host of contemporary topics. In general, the authors have always done their best to keep the content of the volume in line with the happenings in the maritime shipping.
Practicality is the greatest strength of the present book making it as useful in today's world as it was century ago. The seafarers have always tried to gather all available information on marine navigation to put it into the texts for their colleagues to follow. Note that this is not just a history book. Its content has been arranged in eight major chapters. The first one titled Fundamentals provides mariners with the overview of the phases and types of navigation and organizations developing, supporting and regulating it. It is followed by Piloting emphasizing the practical navigation aspects through traditional and newly introduced electronic methods.
The next two parts are solely dedicated to the electronic and celestial navigation explaining their basics and equipment used. The fifth part deals with the navigational math and this is the only part of the book with the content unchanged from the previous edition. Finally, last three parts of the Navigator are covering the safety of navigation, oceanography matters and marine weather incorporating updated information on weather routing etc.
