The inert gas system is a critical safety system on board tankers and its importance is reflected in the way its operation is established in international conventions. This video is intended to amplify and emphasise companies’ own training and the material in the ship's IG manual. Computer graphics are used to give a detailed explanation of the various components that make up the IG system and show both the dilution and displacement methods of gas-freeing. The preparation of the system prior to use, its operation during cargo discharge and gas-freeing, and the importance of regular maintenance are also dealt with.

The cost of fuel has always provided an incentive for ship operators to try and ensure that the vessel's engines are run efficiently. Nowadays, there is an additional incentive that affects not just those in shipping. There is little doubt that global warming is affecting the climate and, if not checked, could mean that in forty years time large areas of the earth's surface will change dramatically. Our children's world could look very different to ours...

The marine environment faces serious threats, many with ties to maritime industry.  While the greatest dangers are to ocean ecosystems and the life they contain, there are also risks for the people and businesses that depend upon them…

Risk Management or Formal Safety Assessment is a concept whose time has come. Both superintendents ashore and senior managers on ships are continually bombarded with new legislation, new paperwork and new procedures. To select what really matters is becoming more difficult and time consuming. Risk management offers an effective way of prioritising what needs to be done to manage both commercial and shipboard operations in the most cost-effective and safety-conscious way.

SOLAS adopted the ISM Code in 1994 and incorporated it into chapter IX. By 1998 much of the commercial shipping community was required to be in compliance with the ISM code. By 2002 almost all of the international shipping community was required to comply with the ISM Code...

The programme emphasises the need for ships’ crews to be well trained and well prepared before entering high risk areas and stresses the need to contact the relevant reporting centres immediately if any suspicious activity is observed. The programme also explains the wider efforts of international organisations and governments to eradicate piracy from the seas.

Freefall Lifeboats are designed as escape capsules for crew abandoning ship or a rig, and provide a safe and swift means of evacuation. They have been used for a number of years and have been responsible for saving many lives. Recently a crew of 14 escaped from their sinking vessel in heavy seas off Newfoundland. As Lloyd's List stated at the time: "The men were able to launch (the freefall lifeboat) despite the violent motion of the sinking ship which would have made escape by a conventional lifeboat doubtful. The men were later picked up by a Spanish trawler and all were unharmed".

This programme provides a step-by-step guide to tank cleaning to a gas-free condition as required for example prior to entry into dry dock. It describes the equipment required in the operation and explains why tanks are first inerted before fresh air is allowed to enter. Safety precautions are presented.

Video starts with basics to describe the principles of operation, discussing in particular the pressures on the suction and discharge side of the pump at rest and whilst running. The video shows how the pressure changes during the discharge due to friction, explanations of the pump's H/Q curves, how to calculate head and hence discharge rate. Part 2 concentrates on how to handle the pumps during the end of the discharge cycle phase. It shows how to balance gravity, pressure, friction and Nett Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR) by reducing the pump speed at low tank levels and throttling the discharge valve. Operation of an automatic priming system and that of taking in ballast are also described.

This tackles the specific area of engine and pump room fires. Though engine room fires are rare, their impact can be devastating - often leading to the total loss of the vessel. By their very nature, machinery spaces contain a potentially explosive cocktail of air, fuel and heat. This package catalogues the hazards and describes simple measures that will keep a ship safe.

This video portrays accidents on deck involving lifting, mooring, ladders, electricity, corrosive materials and many more, as well as the correct procedure in each case. The viewer is shown in a factual and convincing way what damage can be done to the human body when these sorts of accidents occur. By introducing personal details about these casualties, the impact is doubled by the invitation to consider which accident caused which injury - the consequences of carelessness could not be presented more memorably.

Stowaways are an increasingly frequent problem in some areas of the world and they cost shipping companies an enormous amount of time and money. They can also pose security and emotional problems for the crews who either have to confront them or, in some cases, find them dead some days after the ship has sailed. The program shows the importance of thorough planning and full use of a range of security measures to try and prevent their getting on board, and looks at the procedures to be followed if, despite the precautions, they are found after the ship has sailed.

It cannot be stressed too strongly that your ship is your best lifeboat. Abandonment should only be considered as a very last resort. The four principal dangers to be faced; 1) drowning 2) the inability to maintain body temperature 3) lack of water 4) lack of food. The implications of these dangers in terms of priorities of actions that need to be taken in survival craft. Protection against exposure is a high priority in cold climates. The survival equipment available in survival craft. The importance of keeping warm and dry. The use of drogues. The use of lifejackets and thermal protective aids. The significance of leadership in survival situations. Strength of mind will often be more important than strength of body. Inside and outside watches in survival craft, their tasks and importance. The use of detection equipment including the EPIRB and SART. The pyrotechnics, when and how to use them. The importance of water supplies...

Fighting Pollution - Preventing Pollution at Sea comprises a video and supporting booklet and the package looks at the impact of maritime waste. The programme shows how easily oil can pollute the sea and outlines the dangers in discarding banned substances like plastics, as well as other types of garbage that may, at first sight, not appear to pose a problem. The training package then looks at the relevant MARPOL regulations - specifically Annexes I and V which deal with oil and garbage respectively - and the requirements it makes on the Master, officers and crew.
