Freefall Lifeboats are designed as escape capsules for crew abandoning ship or a rig, and provide a safe and swift means of evacuation. They have been used for a number of years and have been responsible for saving many lives. Recently a crew of 14 escaped from their sinking vessel in heavy seas off Newfoundland. As Lloyd's List stated at the time: "The men were able to launch (the freefall lifeboat) despite the violent motion of the sinking ship which would have made escape by a conventional lifeboat doubtful. The men were later picked up by a Spanish trawler and all were unharmed".

The programme shows how easily oil can pollute the sea and outlines the dangers in discarding banned substances like plastics, as well as other types of garbage that may, at first sight, not appear to pose a problem. The training package then looks at the relevant MARPOL regulations - specifically Annexes I and V which deal with oil and garbage respectively - and the requirements it makes on the Master, officers and crew.
