PREPOSITION PLACEMENT IN ENGLISH — A USAGE—BASED APPROACH

Well, it definitely goes without saying that proper placement of prepositions is one of the most complex but interesting areas in English grammar. The present title prepared by Thomas Hoffman was released specifically for those learners of English who are willing to thoroughly investigate placement of the prepositions across various types of clauses.

The author of the book is drawing on more than a one hundred informative examples. Although the book has been written within the frames of the "usage-based" construction grammar, the outcome is presented using the theory-neutral grammatical terminology; such approach used by the author makes the material included in the book easily understandable to all learners representing nearly all syntactic schools.

We shall note that the present title will be of great interest to all syntacticians; however, the info that is contained in the publication will also be very useful and interesting to the researchers of the second language as well as to the people who are working on variation in English language.

Moreover, it could be used by and is recommended to people studying English grammar and willing to concentrate on this particular subject to gain some confidence when making decisions on placement of the prepositions. It may be used as the textbook but also as the reference book.

PREPARING FOR BLOCKADE 1885—1914 — NAVAL CONTINGENCY FOR ECONOMIC WARFARE

HMS Crescent was the flagship of Rear Admiral Dudley Rawson Stratford de Chair, CB, MVO, commanding the 10th Cruiser Squadron, the 'Northern Patrol'. whose task was to prevent the passage of enemy warships and merchant shipping between Iceland and the north of Scotland, and to intercept contraband on board neutrals.

This extract from an official account of the events of 11 November 1914 described how the sea conditions west of Shetland forced the Squadron to heave-to. HMS Edgar was also damaged, besides losing a seaman overboard. De Chair gave an extended and more graphic description of this event in a posthumous memoir.

Crescent was a protected cruiser, completed at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1893, with her 'sister' ship. Royal Arthur Crescent displaced 7.700 tons: she was 387 feet long, with a beam of 60 2/3 feet, and she had three-cylinder, triple-expansion engines which developed 12.000 horse power and 19 1/2 knots. She was aimed with one 9.2-inch, and twelve б-inch 21ms with others of smaller calibre, and two 18-inch torpedo tubes.

Her complement was 520-550 officers and men. The other members of the 10th CS. the eponymous Edgar. Endytnion. Grafton and Theseus, were of similar vintage and design, but with two 9.2-inch and ten 6-inch guns. One, Hawke, was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by U-9 on 15 October with the loss of 560 lives...

POWER SYSTEMS

Nowadays, the process of generating the electric power and energy, its delivery to the consumer and utilization are considered very exciting and challenging field of electrical engineering. Most of the technological developments of today depend upon a reliable, efficient and, of course, safe supply of electric energy.

One of the declared objectives of this title was to provide all interested readers with a fresh, i.e. contemporary overview of the above mentioned matters and to prepare a good guide that could be used not only for educational, but also for practical purposes. The chapters of this publication have been written bearing electric power engineering professionals in mind; however, the info included in the book will be interesting and useful to the professionals from any other engineering disciplines. This volume has been divided by the author into four parts covering analysis and simulation of the power systems, their reliability/planning, power system transients and, finally, power electronics.

The huge amount of useful technical information contained in this book and, particularly, the way the author has presented it make this book really valuable for professionals of today as well as for the students of electrical engineering and anyone who may have some grey areas of their knowledge of power systems.

POWER ELECTRONICS — CONVERTERS AND REGULATORS

The book "Power Electronics" by Branko L. Dokic and Branko Blanusa contains ten chapters - and deals with the most significant items of power electronics. It has been very well organized with lot of examples, figures, and tables.

The first chapter is "Introduction." In this chapter basic elements, as well as some circuits and components used in power electronics are briefly presented. Chapter 2 covers basic semiconductor components, "Diodes and Transistors," and particularly covers their use as switches in power electronics circuits. Chapter 3 is focused on "Regenerative Switches." The description is wide and detailed and this chapter may be of interest not only for students, but also for professionals who use these components in practice.

Chapter 4 is "PWM DC/DC Converters." The converters are classified. All basic topologies of these converters are analyzed in detail in both continuous current mode (CCM) and discontinuous current mode (DCM). "Control Modules" are presented in Chap. 5. This chapter contains a number of control circuits used in power electronics. This chapter may be of interest not only for professionals in the field of power electronics, but also in related fields such as automotive control, pulse electronics, etc. Chapter 6 covers "DC/AC Converters-Inverters". This chapter is comprehensive, covering all important converter topologies and control techniques, e.g. selective harmonic elimination, uni- and bipolar PWM technique, and space vector modulation.

The next chapter is AC/DC converters, i.e., rectifiers. This chapter contains all basic topologies from uncontrolled half bridge and full bridge rectifiers to controlled thyristor and transistor ones. Also, some commonly used control techniques arc presented. PWM rectifiers and their applications are also discussed...

POST—CASUALTY TOWAGE

Please have a close look into this practical publications worked out and released by the UK P&I Club specialists with the objective to address a critically important aspect of the maritime industry of today. The document is originally intended for the owners of the vessels and brokers and it was designed to outline the P&I coverage of the vessels in the course of the towage to a ship repair facility. Such towage usually follows a casualty/event that gives rise to a H&M claim; the owners shall ensure that the P&I risks have been fully considered and the process required to maintain the P&I coverage has been clearly understood.

PIRATES GL CHUNG — PIRATE WINDSAIL SEAFIGHT BOAT SHIP SIMULATOR

Well, this program shall be treated as some kind of 3D simulator that offers user quite realistic conditions of sea, real coast maps made from satellite, moving water terrain, naval cannons and ships battle against the computer. This program has been written in compiled freebasic. Multiplayer mode is supported (in order to play in the multiplayer mode, the users will have to use either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome web browsers).

The simulator was verified to be compatible with Windows 7 and should run even without any problem even on the newer releases of Windows. The whole archive was thoroughly checked for viruses or any other sort of malware and no threats were revealed during the scanning. Wind simulation is also available so the environment conditions are simulated very well.

Although we would obviously not consider this as a training software used to develop the student's knowledge of ship or boat handling, we would still recommend this program for entertainment. The system requirements are actually minimal so this program may be easily run at any computer/laptop. Just try this one and you will see the difference between this simulator and any other of the games or simulators in this section of our website.
