ON BOARD TRAINING RECORD FOR ENGINEERING CADETS

The main purpose of the authors of the present regulatory document was to help ensure that the marine engineering cadets are indeed following the established structural program of their practical training and also to make best use of the time they spend sailing at sea. In following the instructions provided in the pages of this book, the cadets will definitely gain the valuable practical training and, as a result, some important professional experience that is definitely necessary to become a good and competent officer-in-charge of the ship engineering watch, as per the provisions contained in the STCW Convention.

That is why it is very important to follow the guidance provided in this volume. Taking into account the fact that the Training Record Books are usually submitted to the examiners who are appointed by the governmental authorities, it is essential to ensure its proper use and correct completion. In general, the documents includes some explanatory notes left by the Commission on Higher Education of Philippines, introduction and brief overview of the STCW Convention, purpose and scope of this Book, issuance of the relevant certificates and/or degrees, guide to proper completion of the book, shipboard familiarization, ship particulars, safety issues, training tasks and achieved competences, project work and recommended publications.

OIL WARS

Nowadays, Iraq is on top of one of the largest proven reserves of the oil in the world, they are on the second position. Iraq possesses the capabilities to process up to the twenty-five percent of the world oil reserves; in fact, it even has the potential for the near future to reach the position of the largest exporter of oil on the planet.

People supporting the war are denying the fact that the military activities in the area were initiated with the ultimate intention to control the oil reserves; however, they assert that subject massive oil reserves are of the top important strategic interest to the West - therefore, it is vitally imporant for the national security to set a friendly political regime in Iraq.

The opponents say that the immense oil reserves of Iraq should be considered a fundamental factor in the onset of was and they are criticising the willingness of some of the Western states to kill Iraqi people and risk the lives of the soldiers trying to secure the access to oil reserves. Today, the oil output in Iraq and oil export have reached the pre-war levels while the oil prices have risen (note that the book was written and released some ten years ago) due to the was and the instability in the region caused by the war...

OIL SPILL RISKS FROM TANK VESSEL LIGHTERING

It is well known that the lightering a very cost-effective and efficient method of delivering crude oil from various locations to refineries all over the world and an excellent method of transportation of petroleum products. As the huge supertankers often used to transport oil, are too deep and too wide to enter ports, lightering appears to be the most practical option.

Of course, the oil spills are the real danger while carrying out lightering operations and everyone has to take care of marine pollution. This study sheds some light on the basic aspects of safety during lightering operations. As a common shipping practice, the lightering was first emerged in United States waters, particularly in the Mexican Gulf, more than thirty years ago. Historically, the safety of lightering operations has almost never been questioned, despite of the obvious risks arising when the liquid cargo is being transferred between two ships, underway or drifting, or anchored. But, congressional attention has been drawn to the lightering operations in recent years, by the general public concerns about the marine oil spills and environment pollution.

This publication contains some kind of lightering primer with the very basic information, it also tells the reader about the lighering ships, systems and environment, describes the most important procedures and practices, and explains how the human factor may affect.

OFFSHORE SEA LIFE ID GUIDE WEST COAST

The present identification guide is using composite plates of photos readers with proper identification of the offshore marine wildlife, meaning the things that you can see at sea, be they sharks, whales, dolphins, birds, sea lions, or jellyfish. Once you have a name, numerous other resources will help you learn more about the creatures that inhabit the oceans. But that all-important handle, a species name, is the first step in the cascade of knowledge.

This book is an easily accessible and brief guidance covering virtually ass see mammals as well as the sea birds. The descriptions provided by the author are very clear and the photographs are clear.  The reader all around the world have already this work amazingly useful since it is quite small but yet complete. The illustrations are perfect and cover all species.

Great and easily understandable descriptions made this book so popular among the professionals and enthusiasts. In fact, this is the only guide to the offshore sea life having such a compact size, providing about three hundred images and the wording that is suitable even for the beginners. We recommend it to be used as a quick and very handy reference tool for the naturalists conducting the boat trips...

OFFSHORE IS…

The content of this nice training presentation has been specifically designed to provide all novices in the industry with some basic technical knowledge covering the main features and functions of the vessels commonly participating in the offshore exploration, extraction and production of  oil and gas. Any type of the offshore structure, mobile drilling/production unit or vessel can actually been divided into freely floating objects and ones fixed to the seabed.

All offshore units can usually be fixed to the seafloor by foundations, jack-up legs, anchors. The freely floating units hold their desired position by either manual handling or dynamic positioning systems. The presentation starts with the part dealing with the drilling units - subject facilities are divided into three major types, i.e. jack-ups, semi-submersibles/submersibles and drillships. Jack-up rigs are able to stand still on the seafloor, resting on a number of the supporting legs.

When the legs of the jack-up rigs are not deployed, these rigs may float and this technical feature makes the MODUs of this type suitable for easy transportation from one drilling location to another. Jack-ups commonly provide a very stable platforms for the drilling purposes; however, they can only be installed in relatively shallow water depths...

OFFSHORE HYDROMECHANICS

The content of this nice textbook presents the successful attempt of its authors to provide all offshore engineers with the comprehensive treatment of the hydromechanics. The text of the volume has initially been prepared for the students who participate in the offshore technology curriculum of the Delft Technological University. The topics covered by the author were selected on the basis of their applicability in the contemporary offshore engineering.

The treatment applied by the author is including the background theoretical information together with the main application to the real life problems. The text of the volume is encompassing the applied hydromechanics for the open sea. We can say that the volume is built on the basis of the information on waves, wind and currents in order for the external forces acting on the different offshore structures, as well as the motions and stability of subject structures to be determined.

The author of the course has made every attempt to keep the notations used in the text standard. The book starts with the introduction providing the definition of the motions and problems of interest covered in the book. The main portion of the document consists of several chapters addressing the hydrostatics, phenomena of the constant potential/real flows, ocean surface waves, dynamics of the rigid body, potential coefficients, seabed boundary effects, survival loads on the tower-type offshore structure, wave forces acting on the slender cylindrical structures, operability and station keeping, etc.
