MAN — SERVICE EXPERIENCE — SMALL BORE FOUR—STROKE ENGINES

This valuable technical paper is basically intended to provide the shipping industry with the critically important findings directly relating to the service experience of the small bore engines produced by MAN and clearly describe how the specialists have identified and rectified numerous associated technical problems.

An excellent technical compendium for the engineers. Among the topics addressed in this document there are cylinder accidents and technical procedure to follow when adjusting the valves, temperature of the exhaust gases, cavitation, fluctuation of the pressures in the fuel oil system, exhaust gas sensors, cracked pistons and connecting rods, broken gear wheels, groove wear on liners and rings, HFO service experience and prolonged intervals between periodical overhauls, leaking oil, new rollers on the valve cams etc.

MAN — BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SHIP PROPULSION

Nowadays, the primary source of propulsion power used on board ships is the diesel engine, and it shall be noted that the power requirement ad revolution rate depend of the form of the vessel's hull and design of propeller. That is why, in order to work out the proper solution that would be optimal, some general technical knowledge would be required.

The present publication shall be treated as the attempt of the authors to explain the basic terms that are used regarding the vessel types, dimensions and hull forms and also clarify some of the most important parameters relating to the resistance of the ship's hull, condition of the propeller as well as the associated load diagram.

From the other side, it should be taken into account that this book is not intended to provide explanations on the propulsion-related calculations. The book has been divided into three major parts which, in fact, could easily be considered as separate booklets - it means that some of the information that is mentioned in one chapter might appear in another chapter.
