IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIERS 1921—45

The Navy of Japan in the period covered within the present publication written by Tony Brian in collaboration with Mark Stille, was treated as a genuine pioneer in the field of naval aviation, who performed the commissioning of the Hosho carrier, the very first one to be built straight from the keel up. In the time between 1920 and 1930 the Imperial Navy experimented with the carriers, trying to further improve their design and construction.

This all has resulted in a remarkably effective naval aviation of the Imperial Japanese Navy by the time their country entered the Second World War. This nice and informative volume is covering the design of those vessels together with the operation and development of those Japanese aircraft carriers constructed prior to and also during the Second World War.

The author has paid particular attention to the philosophies that used to drive the design of the Japanese aircraft carriers. It shall be noted that some of the carriers have been originally laid down as battle cruisers or battleships and later converted to the aircraft carriers following the Washington Naval Treaty.

The construction of the carriers will give the interested readers a good technical insight into why those carriers suffered the mortal wounds that the American carriers could actually survive, e.g. the construction of the fuel lines and tanks etc.

IMCA — INTERNATIONAL CODE OF PRACTICE FOR OFFSHORE DIVING

The present formal paper prepared by the IMCA specialists and officially released by this organization has been primarily intended to assist all personnel involved in the offshore diving activities, contractor and client reps, owners of the vessels and crew members who are directly involved in the diving operations, OIMs (offshore installation managers) and rig managers employing divers, client representatives who are usually involved in the preparation of contracts and other documentation associated with the forthcoming diving operations, and in fact all other personnel involved in quality assurance and safety in any way.

The present IMCA Code is offering the examples of god working practice and provides all interested parties with necessary advice on different ways in which the offshore diving activities can be done safely and effectively. It has to be noted that the provisions of the present Code have no any legal status; however, so many courts would definitely take into consideration a fact that a company providing the offshore diving services, was carrying out the associated works using the safe and officially accepted working practices. Apart from the intro, the publication provides the explanation of the terms, duties and responsibilities, info on the equipment, personnel, medical matters, work planning, emergency and contingency plans, and documentation.

IMCA — A GUIDE TO DP—RELATED DOCUMENTATIONS FOR DP VESSELS

The title of this IMCA-released publication is self-explanatory - it is dedicated to the documentation related to the dynamic positioning systems installed on the ships. This volume appeared as a result of the thorough review, analysis and update of the 109 DPVOA publication released by Global Maritime years ago, in 1993. At that time the purpose was to work out a common technical approach to the documentation required to be carried on board DP ships.

There have been a number of serious developments since then resulted in completely new guidance papers, introduction of the ISM Code, CMID and others - and, of course, practical experience was gained and lessons were learned. The implementation and use of the computers has also played the significant role in accelerating of the process - it allowed a huge amount of information be available both on board and ashore in the electronic format easy to access and retrieve.

The present publication is aimed to provide all interested parties with a possible means of even better arrangement of the documentation relating to the shipboard DP systems. It shall be considered a non-mandatory but still very useful and practical guide to the relevant documentation. Numerous checklists included in this volume will also help the DP operators better arrange the associated documentation.

ICSOT 2006 — DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF NATURAL GAS CARRIERS AND OFFSHORE SYSTEMS

The trend of current LNG newbuildings is that the cargo capacity keeps increasing every year. The shipyard proposal keeps adding the numbers of tank capacity until there is no limit to the membrane LNG carriers. Prior to this phenomenon, the Large LNG Carriers standard designs are limited to 130,000 cbm to 138,000 cbm In 2004, Qatar Gas selected two designs proposed by Hyundai Heavy Industries/Samsung Heavy Industries Consortium and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to build larger than 200.000cbm capacity LNG Carriers. The contract of the Very Large LNGCs clearly showed that there is no limitation of what is coming to the industry.

The construction of the LNG newbuildings around the world will increase until the Qatar Gas acquisitions of LNG ships settled sometime in 2012. Previously in the past, any LNG newbuildings will be based on a fixed charter contract between the Charterer and the Owner. However, recent trend of the LNG newbuildings is now moving towards the spot charter market and speculative in nature making the newbuildings slots for LNG very tight among the LNGC capable shipyards. In order to become pro—active player in the LNG transportation market and promoting high quality standards in LNGC newbuildings, MISC would like to share the experience gained during supervision of newbuildings of Large LNGC. MISC experience in LNGC newbuildings is further augment by the fad thai most of the newbuildings ordered in the recent years are based the membrane—type insulation rather than other type of insulation like the Moss—type or independent tank—type. In 2004 alone, the big three shipyards in Korea won almost 90 percent of the LNG tanker contracts awarded...

ENGINEERING MECHANICS AND DESIGN APPLICATIONS — TRANSDISCIPLINARY AND ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS

In the last years, the increasing number of the complex problems has required much more technical knowledge  be possessed by the engineers to be able to address and mitigate them. Such problems include but are not limited to the design of various engineering systems and subsystems, their design/re-design and interaction of other systems.

The present publication by Atila Ertas presents readers the fundamental concepts of the mechanical engineering in the context of the design process, providing all of them, and especially non-mechanical engineers, with the required knowledge and understanding of the most important mechanical aspects of a project, thus making the collaboration in transdisciplinary teams a bit easier. The author as managed to combine in a single volume the statics and dynamics, together with the vibration and material strength, offering a practical reference for design.

The book starts with the comprehensive overview of the PtD, standing for the "prevention through design", giving an idea of the occupational HSE needs and presents the condensed introduction to the engineering statics and dynamics, failure theories and various dynamic loadings.

The content also includes numerous real-life examples of the design and analysis together with the practical applications demonstrating how exactly the transdisciplinary knowledge could be applied in practice. The book shall be suitable for the students willing to understand the basics of engineering mechanics, as well as the professionals in the industry.
