DICTIONARY OF DISASTERS AT SEA DURING THE AGE OF STEAM

A very useful and actually must-have dictionary for any naval history enthusiast. The content of the dictionary has been laid out in the encyclopedic manner, and the ships have been covered in the alphabetical order. Note that the dictionary does not contain any ship drawings or photographic images, this book is rather intended to provide naval historian as well as other interested people with clear facts about the vessels covered in it.

Each of the entries in the book starts with a resume of the important technical details about the ship followed with a brief information related to the loss of the subject ship. In some of the cases, this narrative has been limited to few lines that comprise all available information. However, in case of the more famous vessels these narrative portions may run even to several pages. Taking into account that the present volume was initially published by Lloyd's of London, the vessels that have been listed in the book are mainly those insured by Lloyd's.

That is the reason why the book does not include some of the famous vessels - they were either insured with some another agency or simply not insured at all. Though some readers might find this fact a bit confusing, it shall be noted that it is next to impossible to cover literally all vessels lost throughout the naval history in a single volume of any size.

DEVELOPMENT OF THRESHOLD VALUES FOR A MINIMUM STABILITY CRITERION BASED ON FULL SCALE ACCIDENTS

In previous research works an intact stability criterion has been developing aiming at determination of the sufficient intact stability of a vessel in a heavy weather condition. The aim of that criterion was the establishing of the minimum stability level that would ensure that the risk of capsizing that remains is as low as it is reasonably practical. Subject criterion results in the calculation of the index value.

To make this criterion applicable from the practice point of view we will need to define the threshold values for this index in order to distinguish between unsafe and safe vessels/conditions and establishing the minimum safety level in heavy weather. To set the threshold value for ISEI, standing for the insufficient stability event index), the authors of this volume have conducted the investigation of several events of the full-scale capsizing together with the numerical computational methods and procedures.

Subject procedures and methods are mainly based on the computation of non-linear rolling motions of the vessel. Such methods/procedures have been under development in the course of the last decades with the intention of their authors to conduct the analysis of the full scope events of capsizing for authorities of Germany. The associated computations could be used to determine the required threshold values for the dynamic intact stability criterion...

DEVELOPMENT OF SECOND GENERATION INTACT STABILITY CRITERIA

The whole process of design and further operation of the commercial vessels have been subjected to the significant changes during past decades. All of those changes together with the serious impact they have on the intact stability performance of vessels, have motivated the specialists of the IMO to develop the second generation criteria of intact stability. Among the most important modes of stability failure, considered primary, we would note the pure loss of ship stability, broaching-to and parametric roll resistance.

The stability criteria addressed in this publication have been designed in a multi-layered structure, with the first two layers consisting of level 1/2 vulnerability criteria mainly used for the preliminary checks of the risk of dynamic stability failure during the design stage. The present document describes the valuable contribution of the US specialists to the development of those criteria including all stability failure modes. Sufficient level of the intact stability of the vessel is the most basic and important requirement.

The working group dealing with the development of the second generation criteria for the intact stability of ships, has outlines three major modes of stability failures. One of the modes is the stability of the vessel under dead-ship conditions, as defined bi the corresponding SOLAS regulation contained in II-1/3-8. The other two modes cover the restoring arm variation and maneuvering related problems...

DEVELOPMENT OF MARINE RESOURCES

The process of the exploitation of various marine resources, their recovery and economic networks generated by them have been duly addressed in this book from the perspective of continually growing environmental constraints, as well as the associated technical innovation and policy management. The latest developments in the field of marine biotechnology and marine renewable resources, show that man could develop new technologies services and property of the ocean through them.

But, the above stated resources for the development necessitates taking into consideration all technical and social plus also political aspects, and this would be the actual price of both sustainability and also development of the different coastal populations together with the economic sectors, facing with the major objectives of a so-called "blue growth" and reverting to the good state of environment. The book has four major chapters. The first chapter has been mainly dedicated to the general matters of fishing in the Mediterranean area, providing some historical background and also shedding some light on the associated technical changes. The second chapter is concentrating on the microalgae and biotechnology. In turn, the third chapter of the publication addresses the pharmacology of the reef marine organisms; Marine Renewable Energies. Last chapter of the volume is dealing with the marine renewable energies.

DEUTZ ENGINE 3D SCREENSAVER

Absolutely amazing screensaver prepared by the world famous German engine manufacturing company named Deutz AG - the software consists of a truly excellent 3D animation developed to demonstrate the whole assembly process. The screensaver will run on any version of MS Windows, the pack was verified to be free of any type of malware like viruses and trojans.

The video is accompanied by nice music; however, if required, it can be turn off using the settings panel of the screensaver. Watch this video and you will for sure say it is a beauty in motion - of course, if you are an engineer! Apart from its primary aim to work as a screensaver, it will be critically useful when used to show people how the engines work and explain how the parts of the engine move and interact with each other.

We would recommend this screensaver to anyone who likes engineering and want to have a good watch from inside on how the engines operate. Though the engine demonstrated in the animation is not the one for marine installation, the operating principle of all internal combustion engines remains same so we would say it is a good training for the future engineers. The detalization level of the animation is really remarkable and deserving your attention.

DETECTION OF ELECTRICAL DISCHARGES IN BEARINGS

This is a very informative and officially released publication specifically addressing the VFDs, standing for the "variable frequency drive"s; and the volume was prepared by the recognized specialists of the world-known SKF Company. The use of subject drives is constantly increasing, and that is mostly because of their cost effectiveness.

The makers of these drives have all significantly and so valuably contributed to the above mentioned development by making subject equipment much better and reasonably affordable, and this was done by introducing the PWM - standing for the pulse width modulated - drives. However, it should of course be understood that, along with this newly introduced technology, some more premature bearing technical failures occurred; moreover, increasing number of electric motors fail prematurely.

The main declared reason of these premature failures in the mentioned electric motors was electrical erosion. Dismounted bearing will be showing evidence of the electrical erosion - for example, the grease of the motor is also affected same way the other bearing components are.

One of the proposed ways to diagnose the electrical erosion implies using the oscilloscope with a contact probe on a rotating shaft, however bear in mind that this way is considered expensive and too time-consuming, thus very impractical...
