The present document will provide guidance related to the selective overcurrent protection installed on the shipboard electrical systems. Subject fault is commonly observed in the shipboard electrical installations and may result in blackout as well as loss of maneuverability, collisions or fires. Some relevant provisions are contained in the CCS Rules.

These guidelines shall apply to the vessels having a main power station with the total capacity exceeding 250 kVA. There are three main chapters in the document. The first chapter provides general introduction while the second chapter is dealing with the application of normal protective devices including circuit breakers, fuses and differential relays.

The third chapter addresses the selective overcurrent protection in the electrical systems covering general requirements, protection between main and emergency bus bars, main and emergency lighting bus bar, main generators and downstream devices etc. There are two appendices giving examples of the coordination analysis of the selective overcurrent protection of the shipboard electrical systems. A needful publication providing necessary information on the subject.
