Throughout the book, wherever we can, we perform the trick of the mythological Roman God Janus, who could simultaneously face in two opposite directions. One view is called "the forward problem of ocean acoustics" and represents the traditional direction where the knowledge of ocean parameters allows you to predict the sound propagation. And the opposite view is called "the inverse problem" and uses the distinctive details of the particular ocean through which the sound has traveled. We call this inverse view "acoustical oceanography". We encourage our readers to look in both directions.
