The technology community has been actively developing various Ballast Water Management Systems in order to cater to the emerging BW technology market. Such systems are required to undergo various testing and approval processes, as per the International Convention on the Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments known as BWM Convention, 2004 and its Guidelines, including land-based testing under challenging conditions. While several BWMSs are currently being developed or approved, testing among suchsystem test facilities (TFs) around the world tends to be somewhat inconsistent and significant methodological and harmonization gaps remain. This incongruity has finally contributed to a certain level of confusion and lack of confidence among the ship owners and technology developers.
