The present briefing is one of a continuing series intended to share the legal expertise within the UK P&I Club with our Members. A quite significant proportion of the expertise in the Managers' offices around the world consists of lawyers who can actually advise Club Members on various P&l related legal, documentary and contractual issues. The BWMC, i.e. the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water and Sediments, which was developed and adopted by the IMO in 2004, will come into force one year after ratification by at least thirty Flag States comprising 35 per cent of the world's total GT. As of 12th January 2015, forty-four States representing 32.86 per cent out of the requisite 35 per cent of the world's merchant tonnage have already ratified the subject Convention. The outstanding ratification is planned to be obtained shortly and the BWM Convention will most likely enter into force in the next, 2016 year...
