MARITIME ENGLISH — MODEL COURSE 3.17

The IMO model courses are traditionally released to provide required assistance to the maritime training entities with the organization and introduction of the training courses. They will also be useful for the teaching staff of these training institutions involved in updating, enhancing and supplementing the training material possessed with the intention to improve their effectiveness.

The content of the present model course fulfils all relevant STCW Code requirements. Nowadays, good understanding of English is important for those willing to meet specific objectives. The material of the course is arranged in two core sections addressing GME, i.e. general maritime English, and SME, standing for the specialized maritime English.

All English language related competencies stated in the STCW have been covered in this model course. The ultimate goal of the course is to develop the ability of the trainees to use the English language and improve their competence . Trainees who successfully complete the course will be prepared for developing the KUP, i.e. knowledge, understanding and proficiency required by the Code. The course will also give them excellent opportunity to practice the communicating for both general and maritime purposes at different levels.

FIRE PREVENTION AND FIRE FIGHTING — MODEL COURSE 1.20

The present IMO Model Course was developed to provide required training to the candidates in the fire prevention and fire fighting as per the STCW Code. The syllabus of this training course is covering all requirements of the Chapter VI Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Convention, particularly para 2 and Table A-VI/1-2.

The trainees who successfully complete the course will meet the standard of competence in accordance with the fire preventing and fighting related requirements and be competent when taking correct measures regarding personnel and ship safety; they will also get all required knowledge to be able to operate all fire appliances in proper manner.

All necessary fire prevention knowledge will be provided to the trainees. The main part of the course covers the concept of the fire triangle and its application to the fire and explosion, types of ignition, ignition sources, flammable materials that are normally found on board ships, fire hazards etc.

Then the trainees with get information about the organization of fire fighting on board ships, location of the appliances to be used, arrangement of the emergency escape routes, fire spread, measures taken to detect fire and smoke, classification of shipboard fires, selection of the appropriate fire fighting appliances, fixed fire fighting installations, breathing apparatus and their use for fighting fires and effecting rescues, literally everything they need to know.

BASIC TRAINING FOR OIL AND CHEMICAL TANKER CARGO OPERATIONS — MODEL COURSE 1.01

This is the IMO Model Course No. 1.01 covering the basic training for the cargo operations conducted on board chemical and oil tankers. The course materials were prepared on the basis of the information developed and presented by Anglo-Eastern Maritime Centre. Trainees who have satisfactory completed this course will be considered fulfilling the mandatory requirements outlines in the STCW 1978 Convention, reg. V/1-1.

The course covers widely all topics related to the cargo equipment on the aforementioned types of vessels including all important safety aspects and fire safety measures together with the protection of the environment, established operational practice s and all legal obligations imposed by the relevant international regulations and other laws.

In addition to that, the content of the present course is covering various operational and support matters including but not limited to the shipboard risk assessment, shipboard within the frame of the ISM Code provisions and SMS procedures. Five parts of the course cover its framework and outline, detailed training syllabus, instructor's manual and evaluation. Four annexes provide additional materials, lessons plan etc.

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR OIL TANKER CARGO OPERATIONS — MODEL COURSE 1.02

The main purpose of the present IMO Model Course 1.02 is to provide the Masters and officers of oil tankers with the required training to enable them get better understanding of the shipboard cargo operations. The content will be equally useful to any other person on board assigned same responsibility for loading the oil cargo and its discharge as well as taking care of such cargo while in transit.

The cleaning of cargo tanks and other operations relates to cargo handling have also been paid serious attention. The volume addresses all important topics related to their duties on board including the safety matters - it is needless to say that the proper safety culture shall be established and maintained on board any ship at all times.

This includes monitoring of all shipboard cargo handling operations at all stages, checking and maintaining properties of the transported cargo, taking necessary preventive measures to avoid hazards, and of course application of the health and safety precautions.

Fire safety and pollution prevention measures are among the top important ones to consider. the trainees who have satisfactorily completed the course will be considered meeting the relevant training requirements as per the Reg. A-V/1.1/paragraph 2.2.

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR CHEMICAL TANKER CARGO OPERATIONS — MODEL COURSE 1.03

The main objective of the present training course is to provide the trainees with all required guidance to make sure they get duly qualified as per the STCW Code Sec. A-V/1-1 paragraph 3, taking into account the specific duties associated with the loading and discharging of the cargo as well as handling chemical cargoes during the transit. The course is made on the basis of the training program developed specifically for the crew members of the chemical carriers.

Due attention was paid to the safety on board chemical tankers, measures to be effected for the prevention of fires and pollution to the environment; the course also addresses the established safe practices for operation together with the all applicable regulations and rules. The competence requirements dictated by the STCW Code 1-1-3 have been covered.

The content of the program deals with the familiarization with the normally used equipment and controls you will find on the chemical tankers, proper planning techniques and use of the relevant check sheets, safe procedures, acquisition of the due experience to identify the problems and solve them, assistance with and coordination of the appropriate response measures in case of the emergency etc.

BASIC TRAINING FOR LIQUEFIED GAS TANKER CARGO OPERATIONS — IMO MODEL COURSE 1.04

This is the official IMO Model Course No. 1.04 dealing with the basic training for the cargo operations carried out on board modern liquefied gas tankers. As this is the case with all other model courses, it is prepared in accordance with the STCW convention to meet the requirements of the A-V/1-2-1. First of all, the trainees will be given general information on the liquid gas tankers, their construction and general arrangement.

Then, they will proceed to the cargo operations, covering the onboard piping systems and associated valves, equipment used for the cargo handling, loading and unloading of the cargo as well as care during the transit, ESD, cleaning and purging of the cargo tanks etc. Since a good knowledge of the properties of the gases in definitely required for their safe handling, there is a separate chapter in the course addressing their characteristics and physical properties together with the temperature, pressure, generation of the electrostatic charge and chemical symbols.

Note that all above is only one of the parts included in this course. The publication will be extremely useful for all crew members of the tankers and particularly those directly involved in planning and performing the shipboard cargo operations.

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR LIQUEFIED GAS TANKER CARGO OPERATIONS — MODEL COURSE 1.05

The present IMO Model Course 1.05 was developed specifically for the crew members of the liquefied gas tankers, from Master and chief officers to actually anyone responsible for the loading and discharging of the cargo, its handling and care whilst in transit, including cleaning of the cargo tanks and all other activities related to this.

The trainees who have successfully completed this program, will be considered fulfilling the mandatory training requirements as outlined in the STCW Convention, Reg. V/1-2 para 3. The coverage of this training course is impressive and includes the safety of the liquid gas tankers, fire prevention and fire extinction arrangements on board, control and prevention of the pollution of marine environment from the ships, and of course all established operational procedures and practices together with the applicable regulatory framework.

In fact it covers literally all training requirements. In addition to that, the training program also covers the important aspects of management on board, particularly risk assessment plus proper safety management and contingency planning in compliance with the relevant provisions of the International Safety Management Code.

RADAR NAVIGATION AT OPERATIONAL LEVEL — MODEL COURSE 1.07

This Model Course No. 1.07 consists of seven major learning topics. The first topic is the essential theory of the commonly used marine radar systems and gives the basic theoretical knowledge of the systems, which is obviously necessary for all radar operators. The second topic addresses the main operational skills of the systems, while the third one is dealing with the radar navigation and ship position fixing.

The manual plotting skills are dealt with in the fourth section, and the fifth section will cover the functions of the auto target tracking as well as the targets tracked by means of the AIS. The two last topics included in the course are devoted to the operational skills and, finally, the adherence to the provisions of the COLREG when the marine radar systems are used.

All trainees who manage to complete all sections of the present course and meet the applicable performance standards will be able to properly recognize when the marine radar systems shall be used and also perform correct selection of the modes and range settings. They will also get the understanding of the control settings for the best system performance and necessary awareness of the equipment limitations.
