   Coastal states that are signatories to the SOLAS convention are responsible for ensuring availability of adequate and regularly updated-chart coverage for their waters, this includes ENCs. They should ensure the ENC data is produced conforming to the latest version of the S-57 standard, and carries the correct producer code of the maritime authority that has produced the ENC data. Only data issued by, or on behalf of, a government and which are constructed according to the S-57 standard can be considered to be ENCs, and meet IKO carriage requirements. All ENCs are therefore, by definition, official data. ENCs may be distributed to ships in the ECDIS's own internal working format known as System Electronic Navigational Chart (SENC).
