WARTSILA RT—FLEX ENGINES TRAINING AND INTRODUCTION

There are following chapters available in this training course: Short Introduction - Philosophy of the flex-technology; Mechanical features - rail- and supply unit - exhaust valve drive - WECS modules; Hydraulic Systems - fuel injection - control oil - servo oil - starting air; Control Systems: WECS-9500/9520 - system layout - exhaust valve - injection - rail pressure - misc.); EMO-tuning (on request); Service Aspects (general - assembly - disassembly - inspection intervals).

This detailed introductory course will be very helpful for ship machinery crew as well as service and maintenance engineers. It starts with the opening section describing the main advantages of the common rail technology, i.e. flexibility in the operation of the injection and exhaust valves, much more precise control of the volumetric fuel injection, better control of the individual fuel injection valves, much higher efficiency when compared to the conventional engines, so many new possibilities to reduce the emissions to the atmosphere, relatively low steady engine speed (ten to twenty percent rpm R1), good potential for variable fuel injection rate shaping, reduced fuel consumption, free selection if the fuel injection pressure etc.

VESSEL STRUCTURAL CONDITION

This training software was specifically developed by Seagull and, as implied by the title, covers vessel structural conditions. It forms a part of the popular and recognized Seagull CBT (i.e. computer based training). The present module will was released with the intention to provide officers and crew with necessary basic understanding of structural risk factors as well as the forces acting on a vessel both internally and externally.

This is critically important for proper maintenance and survey of critical areas of the vessel. The crew members who take this course would significantly improve their theoretical knowledge of the structure of the vessel, forces acting to the hull of the ship, possible hull failures, proper maintenance and protection etc.

The software would also be very useful to the students - future naval architects and ship constructors - who definitely have to possess a good theoretical knowledge of the above stated items, i.e. the program may be used as a good practical supplement to the main training material. In addition to what is stated above, it might be used by all other parties involved in the ship construction, ship repair, design of the future hulls since it addresses the very fundamental topics in the shipbuilding.

SEAGULL CBT — CD0001 — PERSONAL SAFETY

This training module is the opening part of the world respected learning series developed by Seagull. We all know, it is sad true that the injuries and accidents keep happening despite the worldwide implementation of the ISM Code. Even if the good procedures are established and in place, the personal choices made by the people working on board, and safety culture can actually be of critical importance and mean the difference between safe working condition and incident.

Within this module, the trainees are offered to check the procedures and initiatives intended to increase the human safety, and it is emphasized that it is human making choice that will eventually keep him or her safe. The learners who have successfully completed the course will get a proper understanding of the "safety culture" and be able to recognize all benefits of timely reporting all shipboard incidents and accidents as well as near misses. They will also recognize how important it is to perform shipboard familiarization.

The ISM Code has been paid particular attention and it is underlined that the safe work procedures must be followed at all times. In addition, the trainees will get to know the fundamental sources of the relevant rules currently in place. The main thing to understand, of course, is that the safety of the people working on any ship is a matter of their own responsibility...
