The main content of this compact yet quite useful and comprehensive brochure was prepared by the members of the EXTRA Consortium and is intended to represent their views on the research related to the problems of maritime safety. The booklet opens with the explanation of the actual need for such research in today's world. It should be clearly understood that the waterborne transport facilities are considered key players in the global economics and also a really fundamental instrument.

More that seventy percent of the total external trade of the EU and about thirty percent of the Union's internal trade are handled by ships. And we all understand that the maritime transport of today represents an excellent alternative to the road and rail traffic options. However, the ongoing growth in the maritime traffic shall be supported by the effective transport chains capable of linking the maritime shipping industry to the onshore destinations...

The publication covers the most important aspects of today's maritime shipping industry and will be interesting to the people willing to be updated with the ongoing trends and happening within the industry with particular focus on the safety issues.
