Starting from the very earliest times, sailing has been a truly unique occupation and all of the methods and techniques applied have always puzzled people far from the sea world. Even the wise Solomon used to say that the move of the vessel in the middle of the ocean was far too wonderful to be understood. Today, there have been significant technological innovations and developments being introduced in order to make the ship sailing safer.

The present book will be interesting to the general readership not limited to the people directly involved in the maritime industry. The book is arranged in four major sections, the first one giving general introduction to the ship’s hull covering more or less everything that the readers should be aware of involving the terminology used. The second section is devoted to the spars and rigging of the ship – it was prepared by the professional captain.

The third section addresses the ship’s sails and will provide all information about the types of sails, knots, bowlines, tools used for making sails, flags etc. the closing section covers the ship navigation and handling – it will be of particular interest to the navigators, since is deals with the navigational instruments, navigation charts, sailing theory, and all other important aspects.
