This is maybe the most popular publication on instruments and control systems written specifically for the deck officers. The book belongs to the world famous Reed’s Engineering series. The author has presented the essential principles of the instruments and control systems suiting the everyday needs of the ship officers. It will also be of great practical use to the students of engineering disciplines and future mariners.

There are eleven major chapters in this book. The first chapter gives general information on the engineering units and terminology used. The second chapter describes the properties of gases, while the third chapter deals with the marine boilers including fire tube and donkey boilers, exhaust gas and water tube boilers, boiler corrosion problem etc. The next two chapters address the shipboard turbines and internal combustion engines.

Then, there are three chapters devoted to the pumping arrangements and auxiliaries, refrigeration machinery and ship steering gear together with all parts. The rest of the document covers the shafting arrangements and propulsion, consumption of the fuel oil, fundamentals of control systems, instrumentation and other important aspects.
