TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPING MARGINAL OFFSHORE OILFIELDS

The idea to compile the publication containing the comprehensive review of all technologies that are currently available for developing the marginal offshore fields, appeared out from the original report commissioned with the ultimate intention to undertake for the IDE, standing for the Irish Dept of Energy. This Department looked for the technical information covering all available options for developing of the relatively small accumulations of oil in the Irish area, plus the available systems, and new technical developments considered likely to get implemented in the following decades plus the approximate developing costs.

The authors of this report discovered that there was no any other publication directly addressing those topics comprehensively; the content of this report is therefore aimed to give required coverage in a manner that would be intelligible to general reader. Since it's not possible to fully cover all design aspects of all systems in a single volume thus the authors have provided some references for the persons wishing to get deeper insight in particular areas. The document is covering the elements of the development scheme, existing technology for the development, costs/economics of the marginal fields, and other issues.

TARGET TRACKING DEVICES

Under the new IMO performance standards relating to the shipboard radar equipment, all of them shall now be capable of displaying the AIS information; the term ARPA, in term, is planned to be replaced with the TTD, standing for the target tracking device. Nowadays, a broad range of such devices is available, and the personnel involved in operation of this equipment, shall be provided with the familiarization training at the time of the boarding, and such training shall be equipment-specific.

The present booklet shall accompany this video training film and is mainly intended to be used by the navigation officers to train the cadets and also to be used by all other people on board to get familiarized with the main issues related to the target tracking as applied to the collision avoidance. Maritime radars enable the vessels to pinpoint other ships and to locate the own position of the vessel relative to the landmarks.

The working principle of the radar consists of sending the beam radio wave pulses and amplification, processing and further displaying of the returning echoes - this allows the radio operator to "see" the ships which would normally not be visible due to the mist of fog, or lack of lighting. It shall be noted that the echoes from some targets may not be strong enough and therefore not display while other objects may be obscured...

TANKER OPERATION IN ICE AND SUB—ZERO TEMPERATURES — GUIDE FOR OPERATORS

All information and advice provided in the pages of the present Guidance has been purely intended to serve as a sort of practical guidance. Nowadays, huge oil and gas reserves are there under development offshore Russian Arctic, and vast quantities of the developed oil and gas are then transported by means of the vessels from Baltic Sea and Russian Arctic areas.

Some additional demands are imposed on the crew members and ship systems by the operating in cold conditions, and such demands would typically include the communications and navigation matters, lifesaving, shipboard main propulsion and auxiliary machinery, etc. The present Guidance has been specifically developed for the operators of the vessels operating in cold climates and particularly those commonly exposed to the sub-zero temperatures on a regular basis.

The main aim of the compilers of this work was to provide the shipping industry with the useful information to make all people involved better understand the hazards associated with operating in such conditions and also to facilitate the implementation of required practice and establish the procedures to meet the recognized standards of safety as well as prevention of pollution of the surrounding environment.
