MOTOR CONTROL FUNDAMENTALS

The word "motors" used in the title of the present book, is representing a diverse and quite complicated topic. Nowadays, there are so many different motor types, and numerous methods exist to convert the electrical energy into the rotating mechanical one through the electromagnetism. The main focus has been made on the understanding of the theory of the single- and three-phase induction motors, commonly used control circuit schemes, reading and proper interpretation as well as documenting of the associated control circuit diagrams.

Steve Senty, who is the author of the volume, has also tried to provide readers with the practice circuits used for the connection of the actual circuit components from the ladder diagrams. Since the single- and three-phase induction motors constitute the vast majority of the motors encountered by the construction engineers in the field, the author has decided to focus on them; in addition, the content has been confined to the basic one required for the beginners to understand the motors and controls plus to build the strong technical knowledge basis.

The list of topics covered in the book includes the theory of the electromagnetic induction, overview of the motors, magnetic relays, overload units, contactors, motor starters and starter circuits, two- and three-wire motor control, VFD principles, nameplates and others.

MK IV ARTEMIS INSTALLATION AND OPERATION MANUAL

The system utilizes low power solid state microwave oscillators operating in the 9 GHz band, providing a max range of 30000 m with line of sight. The minimum range is as low as 10 metres. It comprises two identical, user-configurable stations. One station is configured as FIX station, to be set up on a known, fixed location; the other station is configured as MOBILE (MOB) station and is installed on the ship of which the position is to be fixed.

Each station consists of an ABS, standing for the Artemis Basic Unit, on top of which a radar-like tracking antenna is mounted, and either a BOP, i.e. Basic Operating Panel or an EOP, i.e. Extended Operating Panel. The BOP is a hand-held size unit and is intended for use with the FIX station. It needs only to be connected to the FIX station's ABU to enter specific station set-up data (e.g., reference azimuth). Once the station is set up it can be disconnected. The EOP is intended for use with the MOBILE station. Functionally it is identical to the BOP, but it facilitates connection of a variety of peripheral equipment. The ABU design reflects the use of a microprocessor to make a large number of powerful features available to the user, yet making the system very friendly to operate.

Among the features are: full remote control and monitoring of the counter station (once operational), position data (including heading) available at both stations, selectable microwave frequency pairs and an auxiliary full duplex data channel.

MINE WARFARE VESSELS OF THE ROYAL NAVY 1908 TO DATE

For many decades the navigable waters of the world have been traversed by ships of all nations in peace and in war. and during the peace ships have foundered by stress of storm far loo often. With the commencement of war. the hazards of the sea are increased many times by reason of the weapon known as the sea mine, or mine. The evolution of the mine is dealt with briefly later in this chapter, but despite the swept channels, the seas are still dangerous today from mines that have been laid by ships of many nations.

In the early 20th century the British Admiralty decided that the threat from the weapon of the weaker power, for such was the mine described, was now loo well known and foreseen on too large a scale to be ignored. Consequently, in 1908 the Board decided that a number of the smaller vessels of the Fleet such as ships of the "Alarm", "Dryad" and "Sharpshooter" classes should be converted into minesweepers.

From information gained by the trials and experimentation with the purchased trawler Oropesa II and its minesweeping gear, additional trawlers were purchased from commercial owners. The other need was in the provision of minelayers; here, the Royal Navy has always depended on requisitioned vessels to a large extent, although a number of classes of minelayers have originated from Admiralty designs and conversions of existing ships of the Fleet...

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC — FREQUENCY INVERTERS

Here is a huge collection of technical documentation provided by Mitsubishi Electric for their frequency inverters - it consists of more than a hundred files, including the instruction manuals, installation guidelines, reference manuals and technical manuals, instruction manuals etc. There are so many products covered with this set of documents - e.g. CR750-D/CR751-D/CRnD-700 series controllers, FR-A500/F500/E500 series transistorized inverters, RFI filter units, FR-A5AP control/pulse train unit, FR-A7AY/NC (and other series) inverters...

The installation guide also included in the set, offers users the necessary technical information on the control of EMC (electromagnetic capability) when using the filters and inverters - the EMC Directive and it's general requirement are also there; in addition to that, EMC control measures are explained in detail, together with the names and specifications of control components. An absolutely must-have collection for everyone involved in purchase, installation, operation, maintenance/repair of the electrical equipment containing such frequency inverters.

MITIGATION OF HYDRODYNAMIC RESISTANCE

The text contained in this publication describes the state-of-the-art in the field of the friction and resistance reduction techniques for crafts and bodies that operate in liquids and under the free surface. The volume is expected to be very useful for the professionals with the relevant background, namely in fluid dynamics.

The active resistance control includes a discussion specifically concerning the friction resistance, for instance via the injection of gas forming air layers and polymers initially residing adjacent to the hull. The publication is discussing the passive resistance control commonly achieved through the changes in the shape of the hull together with its appendages covering the application of different lifting bodies, as well as stern flaps and bulbous bows of the ships. The authors have also addressed the passive skin friction reduction through application of various special hull coatings plus other elements of the ship hull husbandry.

The content of the volume will definitely be of great interest to the professionals including practicing engineers, specialists and researchers in various fields of tribology, fluid mechanics and mechanical engineering, as well as to the students of relevant disciplines. Note that the authors are the world leaders in the field of the drag reduction so one will definitely suggest that the book is worth time spent.
