KNOW AND UNDERSTAND CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

Today, pumps are quite commonly encountered in the industry and are actually considered essential equipment required to proper and smooth running of so many various technical systems. It is quite usual for all mechanical engineers making their first steps in this industry to possess little to no practical experience with the pumping arrangements and problems that are commonly associated with their operation and maintenance.

It is critically important for them to build up a proper understanding of the design of the pumps and pumping systems as well as of their operation. The publication tackles all above mentioned aspects in a very readable way, drawing on the long professional experience of the author. Though formally the book is dedicated to the centrifugal pumps, actually its content is covering all other types of pumps.

That is why it could be recommended to all people involved in operation and maintenance of different pump arrangements as it will definitely serve as an excellent resource for troubleshooting. The present volume has been written by hands-on people and the material contained in it has been presented in quite plain language, making it easy to understand even to non-professionals. A truly must-have one for both operating and maintenance staff.

INTRODUCTION TO PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS

Another excellent reference source dealing with piping design and construction; according to what was declared by the author of this volume, his initial objective was actually to introduce a completely new practical approach that could be effectively applied to the process of analytical design of the piping.

The book was intended to be used by the practicing engineers in the industry as well as by the students in the fields relating to the piping design. It shall be noted that, in order to be able to use and get the benefit of all training material contained in the book the readers are expected to possess some basic knowledge of the applied mechanics and also the basics of the materials strength. The publication contains numerous informative illustrations, code equations, data tables, some real life examples plus other supplementary material have been included by the author to make the understanding of the theory much easier and the reading of this book much more interesting. At the end of the each chapter there are some exercises and references.

The book has been arranged in ten major chapters dealing with the pipe strength analysis, pressure component design, ANSI and ASME Codes, calculation of the pipe span, expansion joints and loops, flanged piping joints, piping connected to rotating/nonrotating equipment, some special topics and even nuclear components and associated Code.

DETECTION OF ELECTRICAL DISCHARGES IN BEARINGS

This is a very informative and officially released publication specifically addressing the VFDs, standing for the "variable frequency drive"s; and the volume was prepared by the recognized specialists of the world-known SKF Company. The use of subject drives is constantly increasing, and that is mostly because of their cost effectiveness.

The makers of these drives have all significantly and so valuably contributed to the above mentioned development by making subject equipment much better and reasonably affordable, and this was done by introducing the PWM - standing for the pulse width modulated - drives. However, it should of course be understood that, along with this newly introduced technology, some more premature bearing technical failures occurred; moreover, increasing number of electric motors fail prematurely.

The main declared reason of these premature failures in the mentioned electric motors was electrical erosion. Dismounted bearing will be showing evidence of the electrical erosion - for example, the grease of the motor is also affected same way the other bearing components are.

One of the proposed ways to diagnose the electrical erosion implies using the oscilloscope with a contact probe on a rotating shaft, however bear in mind that this way is considered expensive and too time-consuming, thus very impractical...

COMPRESSED AIR OPERATIONS MANUAL

The purpose of this book is to provide a basic understanding of the compressed air systems, equipment, and technologies that are available on the market today. You might have many years of experience with a specific compression system, but the catalogs and sales literature just aren't providing you with the information you need.

Maybe you've just been assigned the compression system as part of your responsibilities and you have no experience whatsoever with this type of equipment. Oftentimes, the compressors are the bastard child of a company's capital equipment and no one in particular is responsible for them. If you head up the company's maintenance department, the compressors probably fall under your responsibilities.

You may be a salesman who works with pneumatic-powered equipment and, from time to time, are asked to comment on your customer's compression systems. In any case, this book will give you the baseline information that will allow you to make well-informed decisions about specifying, expanding, or assessing a compression system.

Like many technical people, I felt that I had a clear conceptual understanding of air compression, I mean, what's to know? You suck in some air, you smash it into a tank. Simple! I even built an air compressor from an old auto AC pump and a piece of pipe when I was in high school.

CENTRIFUGAL AND ROTARY PUMPS — FUNDAMENTALS WITH APPPLICATIONS

This interesting and practical volume has been intended to cover both types of pumps, namely rotary and centrifugal pumps, and offer the learners of engineering and, in fact, all of the involved industry participants a concise yet enough detailed reference tool touching all aspects of the design, technical performance, and main operating principles of the different types of pumps.

The author has made a brilliant attempt to address all areas, starting from the brief historical overview and to the very latest developments and recent technological trends, focusing primarily on the information that would bear the practicality and applicability to the real-world situations, as well as to the techniques that the users could implement immediately. The text part starts with the chapters providing readers with some fundamental technical knowledge required to understand how pumps are working. Then, there are some illustrative and informative practical case studies that address the pumpage, pump system interaction, applications, reliability of the pumps, together with the popular practical solutions proven effective, failure analysis methods etc.

This truly comprehensive title also includes the critical specification parameters and applicable criteria for various types of pumps. The materials provided in the volume will definitely be of great practical use to all members of the maintenance staff.

BILGE WATER AND WASTE OIL OPERATION MANAGEMENT COURSE

The present training course program has been developed for marine engineers and ship deck officers who are involved in the management and day-to-day operation and maintenance of the BWT, i.e. bilge water treatment systems on board marine vessels. The declared purpose of this program is to update the technical knowledge of the existing relevant regulations and treatment techniques relating to the bilge water.

The authors of the course have particularly emphasized numerous practical exercises on the management/operation of bilge water in order to demonstrate the expertise and due understanding of both treatment and disposal of bilge water. Among the topics covered within this publication there are oily water treatment techniques, monitoring systems, applicable regulations, PSC inspection, correct management of the oil record book and other important aspects.

The main objective of the present training course is to upgrade the relevant technical skills and knowledge of the learners. Trainees who have completed this training would be able to explain the fundamental principles of MARPOL Annex I, understand the methods of physical and chemical bilge water treatment, correctly fill in the ORB, explain how PSC inspections are done, and know the role and attitude of the seafarers in preventing the pollution.
