Safety of Life at Sea

The present video addresses one of the most important parts of the safety system on board every ship – the permit to work system. Subject system shall be in place everywhere since it allows to control all shipboard operations and let them be performed in a safe manner. Moreover, having this system in place and properly functioning would ensure proper co-ordination of the different job assignments.

Of course, using the permit to work system is not limited to the ships and offshore installations, the system is used at the shipyards and in fact any place where they do care about human safety. The system implies issuance of the permit to work documents to the persons assigned the task and without that permit no job shall be done. Prior to the issuance of the permit to work, or PTW for short, the safety officer will perform the safety and risk assessment to make sure that the proposed assignment is safe and will not result in any undesired consequences.

Needless to say that having the permit to work system is one of the essential requirements on board; in addition, due attention shall be paid to handling the documentation relating to the assessments and the permits themselves, in accordance with the established safety system.

It is one of the oldest tools on Earth – from the huge machine on a factory field to the hand-held portable – the abrasive wheel’s greatest strength is and always has been its many uses. But do not be fooled as, used wrong way, it can also be very dangerous. This video sets out how to use both portable and bench-mounted abrasive wheels correctly and safely – above all, at sea.

It shows you how to choose, test, mount and use typical wheels and also addresses the international legislation governing their use. The mounting of any abrasive wheel is a task for trained and authorized personnel only. At sea, the majority of wheels are to be fitted on portable machines that are used by the crew members for the routing maintenance. At the other end of the scale, the workshop’s grinding bench is a far more specialized tool…

Note that this video is to supplement an excellent training booklet also released by Videotel and we do recommend to use both of these training resources as a set in order to get the maximum benefit and get better understanding of the dangers commonly associated with the use of the abrasive wheels on board, and how to do your work safely and avoid any issues. Note that the safety remains the priority art all times.

A ship is a working environment which is all about transporting things or people from one place to another. When a ship is carrying manufactured goods of bulk products, they often have to be lifted using cranes, grabs or other lifting gear, and this can be dangerous if not done properly.

This training video supplements a booklet released earlier. It is quite easy to forget that on all ships, whatever the carry, there are many lifting operations which have nothing to do with cargo, and they can be the most dangerous of all. Bringing different cargo items, such as crew possessions, provisions and spares aboard the ship is an important task, but crew members are always busy and time is short.

When hoists and cranes are used for any task, the potential of an injury and even death is significant, especially if the job is done in a hurry, or by the people with less experience than required. Let us see what can go wrong in the course of these operations. There might be poor communication between key personnel involved in the handling operations.

Someone might have disabled the end stopper or a level switch perhaps, or another safety device on the associated lifting equipment. Or maybe someone has not checked if the load does not exceed the safe working load marked on the gear… Any of these mistakes can result in the serious incident.

Wherever the design of the vessel allows it, the use of the forklifts is proved to be very beneficial. They are labor-saving devices and greatly help to reduce the risk of the personnel injury when moving cargo, lashings, securing devices, machinery, ship stores, dunnage or garbage. However, when poorly maintained or incorrectly driven, forklift trucks are potentially dangerous. A lack of understanding or inadequate training increases the chances of an accident.

It is essential that everyone on board be aware of the dangers involved when forklift operations are taking place. This program, together with the accompanying workbook, will look at the most common issues arising from the safe use of the forklift trucks on board ship. Only by following the correct procedures will accident be avoided. The present video together with the booklet will be of great practical use for the people on board every ship where the forklift operations take place.

We would recommend that every single crew member involved or planned to be involved in the subject operations gets familiarized with the contents of this training program. As you can see, the forklift trucks can be of great help to the people; however, their improper use can easily let to tragic consequences.

Many ships are fitted with the fixed carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems and their working principle is flooding the space under fire with the carbon dioxide. For safety reasons, these systems cannot be used in drills. Most seafarers will spend their entire careers without using them and may never become familiar with them. This can lead to ineffective maintenance and worse, it often means when they are needed, they are used incorrectly or their use is delayed.

The result is danger to personnel and damage to the ship. This training video developed by the Videotel will provide you with the necessary instructions and tips related to the maintenance and operation of the shipboard carbon dioxide systems. Make sure you understand your fixed carbon dioxide system and how to use it. Be prepared to use it early in an emergency as there is nothing to be gained by delay. You should only send fire team into the space where the fire is burning if you know that the personnel are inside. Immediately after the operation check if the gas has been released to the correct compartment. You must always wear the breathing apparatus to do this.

The video is an absolute must-watch to all personnel on board vessels fitted with the fixed CO2 fire extinguishing system as subject system is one of the most critical of all. Adequate knowledge of the construction and features of the system may one day save the ship and people on board.

You have made good friends at sea, the best. So it can be very tough if one of them gets killed, as this affects everyone on board in a big way. Everyone remembers the person who died, remembers what happened, and remembers what went wrong. Maybe some lessons would have been learnt – hard lessons. But the next time someone gets killed on a ship, the circumstances will probably be completely different.

If you really think about it, death is just a tip of the iceberg. The figures can vary according to the conditions, but it is quite easy to imagine that for every death there are, say, ten incidents where someone is seriously hurt, hundreds of minor injuries and maybe thousands of hazardous occurrences where someone is nearly hurt. In fact, any of these near-miss events could potentially end up with someone’s death or serious injury. When you think about it that way, it is frightening the number of times every day you face the possibility of something really serious happening.

So, what can the incidents like these mean to you...? Watch this video very carefully and you will get to know about the most important aspects of safety of human life on board ships and needless to say that this understanding plays critical role in the provision of safety of the shipping.

So, you are now about to watch the film which is showing one of the most common situations and factors leading to the fatigue in seafarers.

Please watch the film carefully and be prepared to answer the control questions that are there after each of the sections in order to check your understanding of the lesson. The on-board watertight doors are commonly designed and installed to prevent the water ingress from one water-tight compartment to others when there is flooding or any other accident accidents. These doors are normally used onboard vessels and other marine structures in areas with relatively high probability of flooding are high - these would include engine room compartments, shaft tunnels and some other.

This short video will give trainees some more information on the watertight doors. Note that we have another book covering the construction and use of the watertight doors and an excellent supplementary video film. However, you shall always remember that while the doors are important for the safety of the people, they can be dangerous - they can harm and even kill someone - if you do not strictly follow the correct procedure for their use or do not pay enough attention.

Noting the critical importance of the watertight doors for the integrity of the ship's hull and, consequently, for the safety and health of the people on board and protection of the environment, we highly recommend to go through all available training tools and get as much understanding of this item as possible.
